Research shows that regular contact with nature can improve short-term memory loss, reduce inflammation, recharge immune systems, diminish a sense of isolation, and lower the overall risk of early death. For my mother and me, there was more. Nature brought us together on our respective journeys to find inner peace, to live with joy. But gaining access as one ages can be a challenge.
"A Bench, a Tree and a Flower" is an initiative designed to make nature more accessible to seniors living independently as well as the homebound. Step 1 is providing shaded benches for seniors in Michigan communities. Funding comes from speaking stipends, book sales, and donations. Our first "shaded bench" arrived in February 2024--three sunset maples for a favorite bench along Lake Macatawa in Holland, MI. To learn more, read "Finding Shade for Cottonwood Corner," my January 1, 2024 post. (Posts) Thanks for your interest! |
