If your representative signed one of the letters, please take a moment and say thank you. If you live in one of the eight Great Lakes states and your representative is not listed, or if you have visited the region and understand the importance of these bodies of fresh water, please send an email asking “why not?” It is no accident representatives from both parties are willing to petition the new president to help restore one of the country's natural treasures. Much of the credit goes to the leaders of local, state, and federal agencies, private organizations, tribes, mayors, and business leaders who have been involved in the 2,900 GLRI projects funded by Congress since 2010. They have insisted every project have a clear, measurable goal tracked over time. As a result, members of Congress go to President Trump with a detailed return on the $2.2 billion invested over the last seven years. Part of the credit goes to the Healing Our Waters Coalition, a group of over 145 organizations who not only educate federal officials on the importance of restoring and protecting the Great Lakes, but exchange information across the region so that lessons learned by those involved in one project can be passed along to others. But part of the credit also goes to those of us who insist fresh water be made a priority. People like you and me. Our elected officials work for us. Their priorities should be ours. This year’s request for $300 million supplements local, state, and private funding to implement strategic plans created by the region. The plans include:
I had planned on publishing a different blog this month. It can wait. Pausing to praise those who prioritize our water is too important. Please join me in shining a beacon of light on those navigating the stormy seas of today’s politics to protect the waters so integral to our lives, so easy to take for granted. Thanks for your vigilance, Mary. Also, thanks for making it so easy to take action. I've already emailed Fred Upton to thank him, too. Look forward to future blog posts informing us of the progress being made on this important issue.

Thank you, Mary, for the call to action and the information to make it easy to take action. It is more important than ever that we find and use our voice. I appreciate your inspiration to do so!

Mary, thank you once again for shining your light not only on critical environmental issues but also on ways that we can influence those whose responsibility it is to govern. We are in for a period of deregulation, and while those wheels are turning faster than we'd like, it is vital that we have our voices on record. If we don't, then we will surely hear that there was no resistance to the moves to pollute our waters and our skies.

Thank you for this. It is so difficult to stay on top of all that is happening. If you happen to know the HB number, I'd appreciate it. I hope to be visiting the offices of all my representatives in the next week. My representative, Martha McSally, has refused to hold town halls. Searching for senatorial town halls.

Hi Emilie, I chose to pay to attend the Chamber of Commerce meeting in Holland on Monday in order to speak to my Representative, Fred Upton. I suggested to Fred that we in Laketown Township would have loved to have hosted him in our beautiful Township Hall, but he had to get back to Kalamazoo to have a photo op with the Cub's trophy.

Jerilynn, thanks. My "representative" is Martha McSally and she has consistently voted against everything I believe in. She will not even hold a town hall meeting except in one place in her district where she has a huge base of support.

Thank, Mary. It's heartening to be able to praise congressional leaders regarding the environment. I sign so many petition these days criticizing one thing or another. After reading your blog, I emailed my representative (Bob Latta) and asked him why his name wasn't listed as one of those protecting our Great Lakes. Then I left a voicemail for Marcy Kaptur thanking her for her leadership and telling her I had written to Latta and asked him why his name wasn't on the list of those working to protect the Great Lakes. :)
